X-Gal (5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-galactopyranoside) is a high-purity chromogenic substrate used for detecting β-galactosidase activity. When cleaved by the enzyme, it produces an insoluble blue precipitate, enabling blue/white screening of recombinant clones and β-galactosidase reporter assays.
