Chloramphenicol

Broad-spectrum antibiotic for bacterial selection, plasmid maintenance, and protein synthesis studies.

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotic widely used in molecular biology. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by blocking the peptidyl transferase activity of the 50S ribosomal subunit, stopping elongation.

Originally isolated from Streptomyces venezuelae, it is effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria. In molecular cloning, it is essential for plasmid maintenance and selection of chloramphenicol-resistant bacteria.

For Research Use Only (RUO). Not for use in diagnostic procedures, human or veterinary applications.
